ALMOND – FRUIT TREE

The almond tree (Prunus dulcis) is a deciduous fruit tree belonging to the Rosaceae family. Native to the Middle East and South Asia, it is now widely cultivated in Mediterranean climates around the world, particularly in countries like Spain, the United States (notably California), Iran, and Italy.

Almond trees typically grow between 4 to 10 meters tall and have a spreading, open crown. The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and bright green, while the flowers, which bloom in early spring—often before the leaves appear—are pale pink to white and highly ornamental. Almond trees are among the earliest fruit trees to blossom, making them important for early-season pollinators.

The fruit of the almond tree is a drupe, consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell with the edible seed—commonly called the almond—inside. Unlike most fruits, the part we eat is the seed rather than the fleshy outer portion. Almonds are highly nutritious and rich in healthy fats, protein, vitamin E, magnesium, and antioxidants, making them a popular health food worldwide.

Almond trees thrive in warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. They require well-drained soil and full sun exposure to produce quality yields. Although drought-tolerant once established, they need regular watering during flowering and fruiting periods for optimal production.
