ALSTONIA SCHOLARIS

Alstonia scholaris, commonly referred to as the Blackboard Tree, Devil’s Tree, or Saptaparni, is a tall, evergreen tropical tree belonging to the Apocynaceae family. Native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, it is widely planted in urban and rural landscapes for its shade, ornamental appeal, and medicinal value.

The tree typically grows between 12 to 40 meters in height and is recognized by its straight trunk and umbrella-shaped canopy. Its leaves are leathery, dark green, and arranged in whorls of 5 to 8 at the ends of branches. The bark is grayish and rough, and when cut, it exudes a white, milky latex.

During the flowering season, Alstonia scholaris produces clusters of small, tubular, white to greenish-white flowers with a strong, sweet fragrance, especially noticeable at night. These are followed by slender, paired seed pods containing numerous seeds with silky hairs that aid in wind dispersal.

Traditionally, the tree holds significant importance in Ayurvedic, Unani, and other indigenous medicinal systems. Its bark is used as a remedy for respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis, as well as for fevers, skin conditions, and digestive issues. Despite this, parts of the plant are considered toxic if misused, so medicinal use requires caution.

In addition to its medicinal uses, the wood of Alstonia scholaris has historically been used to make writing slates and blackboards—hence the name “Blackboard Tree.” The tree is tolerant of urban pollution and compact soils, making it a popular choice for avenues, parks, and institutional campuses.
