A fast-growing deciduous tree with fragrant lilac-purple flowers and yellow berry-like fruits. Provides good shade and is often used in landscapes — but the fruits and seeds are toxic if ingested.

The China Berry tree, also known as Persian Lilac or Indian Lilac, is a medium-sized, fast-growing deciduous tree native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It’s admired for its broad canopy, fern-like foliage, and clusters of fragrant lavender to light purple flowers that bloom in spring.

Following the flowers, the tree produces small, round yellow fruits (drupes) that persist into winter. While attractive, these fruits — along with the seeds — are toxic to humans and animals if ingested, so caution is advised when planting near children or pets.

China Berry trees grow up to 30–50 feet tall and spread widely, making them excellent shade trees for large gardens, avenues, or rural properties. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil, and once established, are drought-tolerant and require little care.

However, in some regions, Melia azedarach is considered invasive, as it spreads easily and can displace native vegetation.
