The Royal Poinciana, also known as Flame Tree or Flame of the Forest, is a deciduous tree native to Madagascar. Its scientific name, Delonix regia, means “royal,” reflecting the tree’s regal display of fiery red and orange blossoms. Typically growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) in height, the tree features a broad, umbrella-like canopy with fern-like, finely divided leaves.
During late spring and summer, it produces large, showy flowers, which cover the tree in a brilliant blanket of color. The blooms are often accompanied by a sweet fragrance and attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. After blooming, the tree’s seed pods mature and can be as long as 2 feet (60 cm). The Royal Poinciana is not only valued for its beauty but also for its ability to provide shade, making it a popular choice for landscaping in parks, streets, and gardens in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. However, it requires warm temperatures and plenty of sunlight to thrive.
