Price range: ₨ 5,000 through ₨ 6,500

Sapodilla (Manilkara zapota), also known as Cheeku in India, is a tropical fruit tree that produces sweet, brown, round fruit with a grainy texture. The fruit is loved for its honey-like flavor and is commonly eaten fresh or used in smoothies, desserts, and beverages.

The Sapodilla, or Manilkara zapota, is an evergreen tree native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. In India, it is widely referred to as “Cheeku.” The tree can grow up to 30 meters (100 feet) tall and is valued for its fruit, which has a rich, sweet flavor that resembles a blend of brown sugar, pear, and molasses. The fruit is round or oval and covered in a rough, brown skin. Inside, the flesh is grainy and can range from a light tan to a deeper, darker brown, depending on its ripeness.

Sapodilla trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates, requiring well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. The fruit is rich in sugars, fiber, and vitamins like Vitamin C, making it a nutritious snack. Sapodilla is often eaten fresh, but it can also be used in smoothies, juices, ice creams, and jams. The tree’s wood is also valued for its durability, and its latex, known as chicle, was historically used to make chewing gum.

The Sapodilla tree is slow-growing but long-lived, often remaining productive for several decades. Its glossy, dark green leaves and dense canopy provide excellent shade, making it a great choice for tropical landscaping. Additionally, the tree’s ability to withstand drought and poor soil conditions makes it a hardy addition to many tropical gardens.
