FISHTAIL PALM

The Fishtail Palm is a distinctive and eye-catching tropical palm known for its unusual foliage that resembles the tail of a fish—hence its name. Unlike typical feather or fan palms, its bipinnate leaves are jagged and triangular, creating a lush, textured appearance that adds an exotic flair to gardens, patios, or interior spaces.

Native to Southeast Asia and parts of India, the Fishtail Palm can be grown as a single-trunk or clustering variety, depending on the species. When grown indoors, it makes a bold statement with its tall, upright stems and graceful leaf structure. Outdoors, in warm climates, it can reach impressive heights of 20–30 feet or more.

This palm prefers bright, indirect sunlight and consistently moist (but well-draining) soil. It thrives in high humidity and should be protected from cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Indoors, it’s best placed in well-lit rooms, and misting can help maintain humidity.

One unique characteristic of many Fishtail Palms is that they are monocarpic—meaning the plant will die after flowering. However, clustering varieties continue growing from surrounding shoots.
